Percentile Calculator: Understand Your Exam Ranking
Percentile ≠ Percentage: The Critical Difference
If you scored 95th percentile, it does NOT mean you got 95% marks. It means you scored higher than 95% of all candidates. In a competitive exam with 10 lakh candidates, 95th percentile means you ranked in the top 50,000. Your actual marks could be 60%, 80%, or any number — percentile tells you your relative standing, not your absolute score.
How JEE/NEET Percentiles Work
Percentile = (Number of candidates scored less than you / Total candidates) × 100
| Percentile | JEE Main (10L candidates) | Approximate Rank |
|---|---|---|
| 99.9 | Better than 9,99,000 | ~1,000 |
| 99 | Better than 9,90,000 | ~10,000 |
| 95 | Better than 9,50,000 | ~50,000 |
| 90 | Better than 9,00,000 | ~1,00,000 |
| 80 | Better than 8,00,000 | ~2,00,000 |
Percentile to Rank Formula
Approximate Rank = Total Candidates × (100 – Percentile) / 100
For 99th percentile with 12 lakh JEE candidates: Rank ≈ 12,00,000 × (100-99)/100 = 12,000. Use the percentile calculator to convert between percentile, rank, and score.
