How to Calculate NPS Returns
- Enter your monthly contribution amount
- Enter your current age and expected retirement age
- Select expected return rate (8–10% for equity-heavy mix)
- Click Calculate to see projected corpus, lump sum amount, and estimated monthly pension
How NPS Calculator is Calculated
Corpus = Monthly Contribution × [(1+r)n − 1] / r × (1+r). At retirement, 60% can be withdrawn lump-sum (tax-free) and 40% must be used to buy an annuity (monthly pension).
Worked Example
₹5,000/month from age 30 to 60 at 10% expected return (moderate equity): Corpus ≈ ₹1.13 crore. Lump sum (60%) = ₹67.8L. Annuity pension (40% at 6%) ≈ ₹22,600/month.
Common Use Cases
- Retirement pension planning
- Tax-saving investment (80CCD(1B))
- Comparing NPS with PPF and ELSS
- Employer NPS contribution benefit
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing the default Active Choice without understanding asset allocation — select between Aggressive (75% equity), Moderate (50%), or Conservative (25%) based on your risk profile.
- Ignoring the ₹50,000 extra deduction under 80CCD(1B) — this is over and above the ₹1.5L limit of 80C.
- Assuming you can withdraw 100% at maturity — at least 40% must be used to purchase an annuity (pension).
- Not increasing contributions over time — a fixed ₹5,000/month for 30 years loses purchasing power to inflation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NPS tax benefit?
NPS offers deduction under 80CCD(1) within the 80C limit (₹1.5L), plus an additional ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B). Employer NPS contributions (up to 14% of salary) also get a separate deduction.
Can I withdraw from NPS before retirement?
Partial withdrawal is allowed after 3 years for specific reasons (education, house, medical). Up to 25% of employee contributions can be withdrawn. Full exit before 60 requires 80% annuitisation.

Why Use This Calculator?
National Pension System offers an additional ₹50,000 tax deduction under 80CCD(1B) over and above the ₹1.5L under 80C. With average equity returns of 10-12% in NPS Tier I, it is one of the most tax-efficient retirement tools. The catch: 60% of corpus can be withdrawn tax-free at 60, but 40% must be used to buy an annuity.

- Tax savings under 80CCD(1B) and 80CCD(2)

Calculation Method
NPS Corpus = Monthly Contribution × [(1+r)^n – 1]/r × (1+r), where r = monthly return rate, n = months until retirement. Annuity Income = 40% of Corpus × Annuity Rate.
Worked Example
Monthly ₹5,000 from age 30 to 60 (30 years) at 10% equity return: Corpus = ₹1,13,02,394. 60% withdrawal = ₹67.8L (tax-free). 40% annuity (₹45.2L at 6%) = ₹22,609/month pension.
