Formula & Worked Example

The math behind the NPS Calculator

Mathematical Formula

Corpus = P \cdot \frac{(1+r)^n - 1}{r}
Where: - **P** = Monthly Contribution - **r** = Expected Monthly Return Rate - **n** = Months to Retirement (Retirement Age − Current Age) × 12 - At retirement, 60% corpus is tax-free lump sum, 40% must buy an annuity for monthly pension. - Additional ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B) beyond 80C limit.

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Monthly contribution **₹5,000**, age 30, retire at 60, 10% expected return: - n = 30 × 12 = 360 months, r = 10/12/100 = 0.00833 - Corpus = 5,000 × ((1.00833)^360 − 1) / 0.00833 - **Corpus ≈ ₹1,13,96,627** (~₹1.14 Crore) - Lump sum (60%) = ₹68.4 Lakh, Annuity (40%) = ₹45.6 Lakh

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the NPS Calculator

Is NPS a good investment for retirement?
Yes, NPS is one of the best retirement tools for tax-saving (extra ₹50K deduction under 80CCD(1B)), low-cost professional fund management, and market-linked returns (10-12% equity, 8-9% mixed). However, 40% mandatory annuity and partial lock-in are drawbacks.
What is the NPS annuity rule?
At retirement (age 60): You must use minimum 40% of corpus to buy an annuity (monthly pension from insurance company). The remaining 60% can be withdrawn as a tax-free lump sum. You can voluntarily allocate more than 40% to annuity for higher pension.
Can I withdraw from NPS before retirement?
Partial withdrawal is allowed after 3 years for specific reasons: children's education/marriage, home purchase, medical treatment, or skill development. Maximum 25% of employee contributions can be withdrawn, up to 3 times during the account lifetime.
NPS vs PPF — which is better?
NPS: Higher potential returns (10-12% equity), extra 50K tax deduction, but partially locked and 40% annuity mandatory. PPF: Fixed 7.1% return, fully tax-free, more liquid after year 7. Best strategy: Invest in both — PPF for safety and NPS for equity exposure and extra tax saving.
What are the NPS fund choices — Active vs Auto?
Active Choice: You decide allocation across Equity (E), Corporate Debt (C), Government Securities (G), and Alternate Assets (A). Max 75% equity allowed, reducing after age 50. Auto Choice: Age-based allocation — Aggressive, Moderate, or Conservative. Equity reduces automatically as you approach 60.
