Formula & Worked Example

The math behind the Concrete Mix Design Calculator

Mathematical Formula

Cement = \frac{V_{dry} \times C_{ratio}}{Sum\;of\;Ratios} \div 0.035
Where: - **V_dry** = Wet volume × 1.54 (dry volume factor for compaction). - **C_ratio** = Cement part of the mix ratio (e.g., 1 in M20 = 1:1.5:3). - **Sum** = Total of all ratio parts (e.g., 1+1.5+3 = 5.5 for M20). - **0.035 m³** = volume of one 50 kg cement bag. - Water-cement ratio: M15 = 0.50, M20 = 0.45, M25 = 0.40.

Step-by-Step Worked Example

**1 m³ of M20 concrete (1:1.5:3)** with 5% wastage: - Dry volume = 1 × 1.54 × 1.05 = 1.617 m³ - Cement = (1.617 / 5.5) × 1 = 0.294 m³ = **8.4 bags** - Sand = 0.294 × 1.5 = **0.441 m³** - Aggregate = 0.294 × 3 = **0.882 m³** - Water = 8.4 × 50 × 0.45 = **189 litres**
