Formula & Worked Example

The math behind the Concrete Calculator

Mathematical Formula

V = L \times W \times D
Where: - **V** is the Volume of concrete in m³. - **L** is the Length of the slab/footing. - **W** is the Width. - **D** is the Depth (thickness). - Material quantities use the mix ratio (e.g., M20 = 1:1.5:3) and standard dry volume factor of 1.54.

Step-by-Step Worked Example

For a **6m × 4m slab, 150mm thick** with **M20 mix (1:1.5:3)**: - Volume = 6 × 4 × 0.15 = **3.6 m³** - Dry volume = 3.6 × 1.54 = 5.544 m³ - Cement = 5.544 / (1+1.5+3) × 1 = **1.008 m³ ≈ 20.2 bags** (50 kg each) - Sand = 1.512 m³, Aggregate = 3.024 m³

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Concrete Calculator

How many bags of cement do I need for 1 cubic metre of concrete?
For M20 grade (1:1.5:3 mix), you need approximately 8-9 bags (50 kg each) of cement per cubic metre. For M15 (1:2:4), about 6-7 bags, and for M25 (1:1:2), about 11-12 bags. The dry volume factor of 1.54 accounts for voids that get filled during mixing.
What concrete grade should I use for a house slab?
For residential slabs and beams, M20 (1:1.5:3) is the standard minimum as per IS 456. M25 is recommended for RCC columns, foundations, and multi-storey buildings. M15 is suitable only for lean concrete, flooring, and non-structural work. Never use below M20 for any structural member.
How much does 1 cubic metre of concrete cost in India?
Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) costs ₹4,500-₹6,500/m³ for M20 grade depending on the city. Site-mixed concrete costs ₹3,500-₹5,000/m³ (materials only). Add ₹500-₹1,000/m³ for labour, formwork, and curing. Premium grades (M30+) cost 15-25% more.
What is the water-cement ratio and why does it matter?
Water-cement ratio (w/c) is the weight of water divided by weight of cement. M20 uses 0.45-0.50, M25 uses 0.40-0.45. Lower w/c ratio means stronger concrete but harder to work with. Too much water weakens concrete significantly: every 1% extra water reduces strength by around 5%.
How long should concrete be cured?
Minimum 7 days for OPC cement, 10-14 days for PPC/PSC cement. Proper curing (keeping concrete moist) develops 65% strength in 7 days and 99% in 28 days. Skip curing and you may lose 30-40% of the designed strength. Use wet jute bags, ponding, or curing compounds.
