Formula & Worked Example

The math behind the Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Mathematical Formula

Tax = Gains \times TaxRate
India Capital Gains Tax (from July 2024): - **Equity (Stocks/Equity MFs):** - STCG (held < 12 months): 20% on gains - LTCG (held ≥ 12 months): 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 Lakh - **Debt MFs (purchased after April 2023):** Taxed at income tax slab rate - **Property (held ≥ 24 months):** 12.5% LTCG without indexation - Plus 4% Health & Education Cess on tax amount

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Sold equity shares: Buy ₹1,00,000, Sell ₹1,80,000, Held 18 months: - Gains = ₹80,000 (Long-term, held > 12 months) - Exemption limit = ₹1,25,000 - Taxable LTCG = ₹80,000 − ₹1,25,000 = **₹0** (within exemption) - **Tax payable: ₹0** — No tax on LTCG up to ₹1.25 Lakh

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Capital Gains Tax Calculator

What is the difference between STCG and LTCG?
STCG (Short-Term Capital Gains) applies to assets sold within a specified period, while LTCG (Long-Term Capital Gains) applies to assets held beyond that period. For equity: <12 months is STCG (20%), ≥12 months is LTCG (12.5% above ₹1.25L). For debt/property: the qualifying period varies.
How much LTCG is tax-free on equity?
From Budget 2024: LTCG on equity shares and equity mutual funds up to ₹1.25 Lakh per financial year is exempt from tax. Gains above ₹1.25 Lakh are taxed at 12.5% (increased from ₹1 Lakh and 10% previously).
What is indexation benefit in capital gains?
From Budget 2024: Indexation benefit has been removed for most asset classes. Property sold after July 23, 2024 is taxed at 12.5% LTCG without indexation (previously 20% with indexation). For properties bought before 2001, you can use fair market value as of April 1, 2001 as cost.
Can I offset capital losses against gains?
Yes. STCL (short-term capital loss) can be set off against both STCG and LTCG. LTCL (long-term capital loss) can only be set off against LTCG. Unabsorbed losses can be carried forward for 8 assessment years. This is called tax-loss harvesting.
How are mutual fund capital gains taxed?
Equity MFs (>65% equity): STCG at 20%, LTCG at 12.5% above ₹1.25L. Debt MFs (bought after April 2023): No LTCG benefit — taxed at income slab rate regardless of holding period. Hybrid MFs: Classified as equity or debt based on equity allocation (>65% or <65%).
