Resistor Calculator
Decode resistor color bands to find resistance value. Supports 4-band, 5-band, and 6-band resistors with tolerance and temperature coefficient.
What is Resistor Calculator?
This resistor color code calculator decodes the colored bands on through-hole resistors to determine their resistance value, tolerance, and temperature coefficient. Works with 4-band, 5-band, and 6-band resistors with a visual color picker.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your Band 1, Band 2, Multiplier, and other required values in the input fields
- Results are computed instantly as you enter or modify values — no need to click a button
- Review the computed output showing your resistor results with a detailed breakdown
- Use the output for preliminary design checks — critical applications require verification by a licensed professional
How Resistor Calculator is Calculated
This calculator computes resistor values using standard engineering reference formulas (IS/IEEE/ASME). Results are preliminary estimates suitable for coursework and early-stage design checks. All critical applications must be verified by a licensed professional engineer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I read resistor color bands?
For a 4-band resistor: Band 1 (tens digit) + Band 2 (units digit) × Band 3 (multiplier), Band 4 (tolerance). Brown-Black-Red-Gold = 10 × 100 = 1kΩ ±5%. Start reading from the end with bands closest together.
What does the gold and silver band mean?
As the tolerance band (last): Gold = ±5%, Silver = ±10%, Brown = ±1%, Red = ±2%. As a multiplier (3rd band): Gold = ×0.1, Silver = ×0.01 (for sub-ohm resistors).
