Mileage Calculator
Calculate your vehicle's fuel efficiency in km/L and cost per kilometre. Track mileage over time and compare with ARAI ratings. Free mileage calculator.
What is Mileage Calculator?
The Mileage Calculator determines your vehicle's actual fuel efficiency by dividing distance covered by fuel consumed. It shows results in km/L and cost per km, helping you track efficiency over time.
How to Calculate Vehicle Mileage
- Fill your tank completely and reset the trip meter
- Drive normally until near empty
- Refill the tank and note litres filled
- Enter the km driven and litres filled in the calculator to see your mileage
How Mileage Calculator is Calculated
Mileage = Distance Covered (km) / Fuel Used (litres). L/100km = 100 / Mileage. Cost per km = Fuel Price / Mileage. Annual fuel cost = (Annual km / Mileage) × Fuel Price.
Worked Example
Drove 450 km and used 30 litres of petrol: Mileage = 450/30 = 15 km/L. At ₹105/L: cost per km = ₹7. For 12,000 km/year: annual fuel cost = ₹84,000.
Common Use Cases
- Vehicle fuel efficiency tracking
- Cost comparison between cars
- Annual fuel budget estimation
- Identifying mileage drops (maintenance needed)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring mileage on a single tankful — driving conditions vary. Average 3–4 fill-to-fill readings for reliable results.
- Not using the fill-to-fill method — partial fills give inaccurate readings. Always fill to the brim both times.
- Blaming low mileage on the car when driving habits are the issue — aggressive acceleration, high speeds, and running AC constantly reduce mileage by 20–30%.
- Comparing petrol car mileage directly with diesel — diesel cars have better km/L but the cost per km comparison must factor in different fuel prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is good mileage for a car in India?
Petrol hatchback: 15–20 km/L. Diesel: 18–25 km/L. SUV: 10–15 km/L. Two-wheeler: 40–60 km/L. These are typical real-world figures.
Why is my actual mileage lower than ARAI rating?
ARAI testing is done under ideal lab conditions. Real-world mileage is 15–25% lower due to traffic, AC, passenger load, road conditions, and driving style.
