Who Pays Professional Tax?
- Salaried employees: Deducted by employer and deposited with the state government
- Self-employed professionals: Doctors, lawyers, CAs, architects must pay directly
- Business owners: Must pay PT on business income
- Freelancers: Required to pay in some states if income exceeds the threshold
Is Professional Tax Deductible from Income Tax?
Yes. Professional tax paid is fully deductible from your gross salary when calculating taxable income under both old and new tax regimes. It shows up in your Form 16 as a salary deduction. If you pay ₹2,400/year in PT, your taxable income reduces by that amount. The actual tax saving depends on your slab — at the 30% bracket, ₹2,400 in PT saves you ₹720 + cess in income tax.
Professional Tax Exemptions
- Parents of children with permanent disabilities (some states)
- Members of armed forces (varies by state)
- People with disabilities above certain threshold (state-specific)
- Agricultural income earners (in most states)
